Historical background
The Malliks are famous all over the world for their very rhythmic interpretation of Dhrupad. Apart from old Dhrupad and Dhamar compositions – of which they have an unrivalled repertoire – they are also known for their rendition of the songs of the medieval poet Vidyapati in the Khayal, Tarana, Ghazal, Bhajan and Thumri style.
The long-standing tradition of the Dhrupad lineage of the Darbhanga tradition is embodied in the amazing power of the Alaap, the continuous flow of rhythm coupled with the finest recitative (kavita).
The use of Khandarvani and Gauharvani. Basically this gharana has also maintained the branches of Veena and Pakhavaj playing. The performance of Dhrupad singers of the Darbhanga gharana can be identified mainly by the manner in which they sing the compositions after the Alaap.
